What is online triathlon coaching with Thrive?
Thrive Triathlon offers personal, one-to-one online coaching for triathletes. Your coach builds a training plan around your goals, work, family and the time you actually have, reviews how each session went, and adjusts the plan as you progress. Coaching includes swim, bike and run training plus pacing, fuelling and race-day preparation.
Who are the coaches?
Thrive is run by two British Triathlon (BTF) qualified coaches. Paul Lunn is a Level 2 BTF coach with three Ironman 70.3 World Championship wins, two Ironman wins, numerous 70.3 wins and two Kona podium finishes; he specialises in high-performing athletes and has guided clients to world championships. Louise Hathaway is a BTF Diploma coach with several podium finishes who has raced at two Ironman 70.3 World Championships; she specialises in helping athletes with busy lives step up to new distances.
Do you coach athletes outside the UK, including in the USA?
Yes. Thrive is based in Peterborough, UK, but all coaching is delivered online, so we coach athletes in the UK, the USA and worldwide. Plans, feedback and messaging don't depend on being in the same time zone, and calls are arranged at a time that suits you.
What distances do you coach?
All triathlon distances – sprint, Olympic (standard), Ironman 70.3 (half distance) and full Ironman – as well as duathlon and stand-alone swim, bike or run goals.
Do I need to be fast or experienced to get a coach?
No. We coach age-group athletes at every level, from people stepping up to a new distance to athletes chasing podiums and world championship qualification. What matters is that you have a goal and want structured help getting there.
Do you coach athletes aiming to qualify for the Ironman or 70.3 World Championships?
Yes. Paul has won 70.3 World Championship titles himself and has coached athletes to world championships. Coaching for qualification focuses on race-specific training, pacing strategy, fuelling and peaking for your key race.
How much does triathlon coaching cost?
Get in touch and we'll explain the options and costs before you commit to anything. We are not a large commercial coaching company, we are passionate triathlon coaches who love what we do for our athletes.
How are training plans delivered?
Your sessions are delivered through TrainingPeaks, which syncs with Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift and most other devices and apps. Your coach reviews your completed sessions and leaves comments and adjustments there.
How will I communicate with my coach?
Through comments on your TrainingPeaks sessions, WhatsApp messages and phone or video calls when needed. You can ask questions and tell us how sessions felt at any time.
How many hours a week do I need to train?
That depends on your distance and goals, but your plan is always built around the time you have. Many of our athletes balance training with full-time jobs and families – our coaches do too.
How do you set my training zones?
We use simple field tests: a swim CSS (Critical Swim Speed) test using a 400m then a 200m time trial, a 20-minute or 8-minute FTP test on the bike, and a run threshold heart-rate (LTHR) test. You can try our free CSS calculator, FTP calculator and LTHR run test calculator.
Do you help with race-day pacing and nutrition?
Yes. Pacing, fuelling and race-day preparation are part of coaching, including a race plan for your key events.
